How Falaga started
I'm Justin Buu'lolo. I grew up in Nias, North Sumatra, surfing my home wave, and I've spent years surfing all around Bali since.
Nias taught me the part of surfing nobody can explain to you on the sand. When a wave is fast and hollow and there is reef underneath it, you learn to read the ocean before it arrives — which set is worth it, where it will break, and where you need to be sitting well before it gets there. You do not get away with guessing.
That is what I brought to coaching. I started Falaga because I wanted to work with surfers one at a time rather than run a big school. Every session I take myself, and I build it around whoever is in front of me — a first-timer who has never touched a board, or someone who has been surfing for years and wants to stop wasting waves.
My job is to put you in the right place at the right time, tell you the one thing that will make the next wave better, and make sure you understand how a lineup works while you are at it. If you leave more confident than you arrived, that is the session doing its job.
