Private surf coaching in Bali

A two-hour session with Justin Buu’lolo watching every wave you take. It suits a first-ever surf and it suits an experienced surfer trying to fix one specific thing — because the session is built around whoever is in front of him.

What you work on

Coaching, not a lesson script

A surf lesson teaches you to stand up once. Coaching is what happens over the sessions after that, and it is where Falaga sits.

  1. Wave selection

Which waves are worth paddling for on this tide, at this spot, at your level. Most of the improvement in a session comes from choosing better, not paddling harder.

  2. Take-off and positioning

Being in the right place before the wave arrives, angling the take-off, and getting to your feet without fighting the board.

  3. Confidence in bigger water

Stepping the difficulty up in a controlled way, in conditions Justin picks — not by being talked into a day that is beyond you.

  4. Feedback you can use

One thing at a time, said in a sentence, in time to try it on your next wave. That is the method his long-standing surfers keep coming back for.

Who it is for

Every level, honestly assessed

Falaga coaches beginners and improving surfers. Justin will tell you where you actually are rather than where you would like to be — which is what makes progress fast.

Never surfed before

White water, a soft-top, a sandy beach, and Justin in the water next to you. By the end of a first session most people have stood up and ridden a wave in.

Beginner, still fighting it

You can stand, sometimes. The work is paddling technique, timing, and choosing waves that will actually carry you rather than the ones that look good.

Improving, going green

Riding along the face and starting to sit in a lineup with other people. Positioning, take-off angle and etiquette all become the same conversation.

Intermediate

Confident on the board, less confident about which wave and which day. Wave selection, reading conditions, and stepping up carefully into more demanding surf.

Falaga does not advertise coaching beyond this. If you want something more specialised, ask Justin directly and he will tell you whether he is the right person.

The part most lessons skip

Surf etiquette is coached, not mentioned

Falaga's reviewers bring this up unprompted. Learning to surf without learning how a lineup works produces a surfer nobody wants near them.

  • Priority

Who the wave belongs to, and how to tell before you commit to it. The single most common way visiting surfers make themselves unwelcome.

  • Positioning

Where to sit so you catch waves without sitting on top of everyone else — and so you are not the one paddling into the impact zone.

  • Paddling out

Reading the channel, timing the gap, and where to go when someone is riding towards you.

  • Reading the day

Knowing when a session is beyond you, and being comfortable saying so. Judgment is part of surfing well.

  • Takes you around different spots depending on the day and your abilities.

Book it

One-to-one, or two of you

Private coaching is one surfer with Justin. If there are two of you at a similar level, the semi-private session works out cheaper per person and you get to watch each other surf.

Questions

About private coaching

All questions

Can intermediate surfers get coaching, or is this only for beginners?

Intermediate surfers are coached too. Falaga is a coaching service rather than a beginner surf school: returning surfers work on wave selection, positioning and confidence in bigger or less forgiving waves, and Justin steps the difficulty up as they improve.

Does Justin teach surf etiquette?

Yes, and it is part of what makes Falaga different. Alongside catching waves you learn who has priority, where to sit, how to paddle around other people and how to behave in a lineup — the things that make you welcome in the water rather than just able to stand up.

Where will we surf?

Sessions run around the Bukit Peninsula, South Bali, near spots such as Uluwatu, Balangan, Dreamland. Falaga has no fixed storefront or single beach — Justin picks the spot and the time from the conditions on the day and the level of the surfer, which is exactly why the lessons work for beginners and improving surfers alike. He confirms the meeting point with you over WhatsApp before the session.

Can complete beginners take a lesson?

Yes. First-time surfers are welcome, and a beginner session runs in white water at a sandy beach on a soft-top board. Justin stays in the water with you, so you are not sent out on your own to work it out.

How far in advance should I book?

There is no fixed booking window. Justin coaches every session himself, so his week fills up — message him with your dates as soon as you know them and he will tell you what is still free.
